During the war the regime imposes a widespread system of control on the population, relying on a vast deep-rooted net of informers. Military and civilian correspondence is subjected to a careful sifting by the censor.
The regime tries to filter, without success, all communications between people and all information coming from abroad.
The production system in the province of Florence is mobilized to serve the cause of the war. Various industries, such as Galileo and Pignone, are reorganized to supply the production needs of the war.
In this context the labourers’ work conditions become tougher and rigidly restrained. Moreover, the presence of women in factories and in service industries increases considerably.
