At the out-break of the war, one of the most relevant priorities becomes the protection of the invaluable Florentine artistic heritage.

Superintendent Giovanni Poggi and other officials arrange a complex system of air-raid protection both for the monuments and for the works of art preserved in the museums. This system will be progressively tightened.

Under the Nazi occupation – in particular during spring and summer 1944 - the most urgent efforts revolve round preventing appropriations of works of art by the Germans.
